Day 11 Joshua 1-4
GOOD
SUCCESS This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth – Josh. 1:8
Most people want to be successful. Not all define success the same way. This is the only verse in the Bible that uses the word success. Success can mean the gaining of wealth or it can refer to a favorable and desired outcome. If you are looking for renown and wealth there are plenty of self-help books out there. Before you start buying the latest tomes on fame and fortune, remember that God is talking about good success. There is also a bad success.
If your goal is fame, the Bible is the wrong book for you. The Bible does, however, record many individuals who went down in flames (or to flames) working on their own glory. God asked, “Do you seek great things for yourself? Don’t seek them” (Jer. 45:5). There are many wealthy people in the Bible, but God’s greats never sought riches. Their material belongings were incidental to their spiritual success. They may have had money, but money never had them.
Here is God’s formula for good success. Speak the Scriptures – This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth. This could also refer to memorizing which was a principal means of teaching the Word of God. Next, meditate…day and night. Study, muse over, or reflect on the Word. This moves truth from our heads to our hearts. Finally, do…it. Truth is something to do, not just hear. The Word is something we practice. When this process is honored, God’s truth moves from the mouth to the mind, to the heart, to our actions.
Another thought in Joshua 1:8 is to make your way prosperous, which actually means to push forward. Prosperous is sometimes translated break out. If we follow God’s formula for success, truth will break out. The Word of God first works in us and then breaks out of us powerfully, producing success. Are you ready to push forward? Don’t waste time. We never know how much we have left. Begin here. Begin today.
How do you view success?
