Day 26

Judges 17-19

WHAT’S RIGHT?

Everyone did what was right in his own eyes – Judg. 17:6

Relativism is nothing new.  By the time Israel was 400 years removed from Moses they couldn’t find their way home again.  This time they turned their own inheritance into a wilderness.  Truth was lost in a spiritual morass of self doubt, compromise, and confusion.  From time to time judges rose up to lead the way, but they were irregular in themselves.  If you’re strangely surprised in the weakness of God’s leaders during this period, just remember that they were the best God had to work with.  The only normal judge was a woman.

How does truth get lost?  Basically it leaves with conviction.  Conviction disappears when love wavers.  Love wavers with self- indulgence.  No society can indulge itself without drifting toward relativism.  The last five chapters of Judges record incidents of spiritual and social breakdown that defy imagination.  It’s a total surprise that such reprehensible behaviors could be found in the Scriptures.  But that’s one reason we know the Bible is true.  God records the sordid details.  It’s a must read.  That’s your homework.  If you’re expecting a solution, however, forget it.  The last verse of Judges (21:25) is a repeat of our theme verse for today.  You’ll have to move on to the next book for any hope.

How did we get lost?  The same way truth gets lost.  America has been sinking for years.  Once the courts showed God the way out of our public schools they opened the door for relativism flow in like a flood.  Now we’re like Israel of old – Everyone (does) what (is) right in his own eyes.  We’re stuck in the same morass.  No one seems able to lead us out.  I’m looking for a woman!  Where’s Deborah?

I can promise one thing:  God isn’t lost.  If we’re lost it is because we have lost God.  Like the lost son in Luke 15 we will not find Him until we come to ourselves.  When we arise and backtrack we’ll not be surprised to find God right where we left Him – waiting.  Are you hearing this?

Lord, open these eyes!
